These are often the students who will be the first in their families to attend college and are from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education. AVID Secondary equips teachers and schools with what they need to help these students succeed on a path to college and career success. To address this need, AVID has developed the AVID Elective course. For one period a day, students receive the additional academic, social, and emotional support that will help them succeed in their school’s most rigorous courses. The Rotary Club of East Cobb was the presenting sponsor for this program @ Wheeler High School in Marietta, GA four years ago. We provided $15k-$20k each year for the first 4 years. This project is a core program for our cub. This program is a life changing event for the students and their families and it also offers training for the teachers.
Incoming REC President Tammy Palmgren has been committed to AVID since its inception with her experience with the Cobb Chamber Principal for A Day Experience. The REC has continually donated Time, Talent and Treasure to the Program.
